What we feed our dogs
Yes, all-meat diets are NOT balanced. You cannot feed a diet of just meat to your dog and expect it to do well. Your dog needs bones and organ meat as well to obtain the proper nutrients. This means feeding a prey-model diet based on a whole prey animal. Remember that your dog has no needs for vegetables, and that most of the nutrients in vegetables—even pre-processed ones—are unavailable to your dog . The alternative? Feed according to the prey model and provide variety. If you are feeding whole animals or a variety of raw meaty bones and organ meats, then your diet will be balanced. Raw foods contain the exact proportions of fat, protein, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes a dog needs.

To work out a dogs eating amount...daily requirement is 2-5% of their weight. So if their weight is 30kgs they would need say 2 % (for a not majorly active dog) of that in food = 600g of food a day. 3% of 30 kgs is 900g of food a day. All depends on how active they are.

We usually feed all meals with whole eggs, shell included and Gelatinaat - a collagen supplement ( http://www.primeval-australasia.com/canine/index.html ).

Fish Oil 2-5 1000mg capsules every day or second day or EVERY meal with chicken...we get the reflux free ones . We just give them this as a treat after they have had their meal. Fish Oil can also be added as a liquid. They are fed once a day at 3-5pm.

They must have Beef liver at least 2 -3 times a week if possible to bowel tolerance, other liver is fine but beef liver is best, other offal, tripe and kidneys etc are given as a mixture every few days. So one day a kidney ,one day some green tripe etc etc. Then liver and some days not at all etc etc.

Ratio of feeding we use is 70-80% meat, can be on it's on or on the bone.

Bone,is 15-20% is always with meat attached, say necks, lamb flaps, brisket,t bone, shoulder chops, roast cuts, quarter or half chickens etc ,chicken breast bone in etc.

Offal is 5-10%,liver should make up half of this.

Heart is not offal it's a muscle meat and should be fed as such,as is tongue.

When switching over to a completely raw diet just stick with chicken for 3-5 days and then start adding in variety. Keep offal amounts low as it will give diarrhea until they get the right enzymes in their stomach to digest it. Do not feed raw one day and then kibble the next. They use different enzymes to digest the different types of food. Pick one or the other and stick to it.

A really good place to start if you are not sure about doing it yourself or you are sqeamish about handling raw meat is K9 Natural . This will alllow you to see how your dogs do on raw as well as eliminate any mistakes you could make if you do choose to feed raw and maybe don't include enough offal or can't get the calcium /phosphorous ratio right. An unblanced raw diet over time can be just as disastrous as a kibble diet. K9 Natural have done the thinking and the hard work for you and all my dogs are fed this food and do fantastically on it. All I add is raw meaty bones that I vary from day to day.

What you will notice when feeding raw,is brighter eyes, cleaner ears, a softer coat,no bad breath, smaller stools that do not smell (I am not joking, they don't) ,increased energy and vitality and your dogs will go NUTS at mealtimes.

WHY WOULD YOU NOT FEED RAW with those results!

As an alternative to a totally raw diet and one we feel is almost as good, is a product by Ziwipeak. This is an all New Zealand company but can be purchased virtually worldwide and the meals are either dehydrated versions of raw meat and offal or a retort (cooked in the can) canned food. Included in each of the cuisine meals is New Zealand Green Lipped mussel, which is  a 100% natural source of Glucosamine, glycogens and Omega-3 fatty acids with proven ability to nutritionally support long-term joint health.

Our dogs have eaten on Ziwipeak as well as raw and the results of both are far better than you can get feeding a grain based 'kibble'.
